Drexel University is set to welcome a new president, Antonio Merlo, who currently serves as the Dean of the College of Arts & Science at New York University. Merlo, a political economist originally from Italy, will take over from interim president Denis P. O’Brien on July 1, 2025. O’Brien stepped into the role following the departure of John A. Fry, who had led Drexel for 14 years before becoming president of Temple University.
Merlo’s Background and Experience
Antonio Merlo, 61, brings with him a wealth of experience from his 14 years at the University of Pennsylvania, where he held various roles, including economics professor and department chair. His leadership extended beyond academics, as he also coached the men’s water polo team, leading them to three championship titles in the Mid Atlantic Division of the Collegiate Water Polo Association.
The decision to appoint Merlo came after an extensive six-month search involving a committee of trustees, faculty members, students, and administrators. Outgoing chair of Drexel’s board of trustees, Richard Greenawalt, expressed confidence in Merlo’s ability to steer the university through its current challenges, emphasizing his commitment to academic entrepreneurship and collaboration.
Challenges Ahead for Drexel
Drexel University faces significant financial hurdles, exacerbated by a declining number of college-bound students and increased competition. In recent months, the university has undergone structural changes, including the consolidation of colleges and the transition from a quarter-based to a semester-based system. The institution reported a 15% decline in first-year student enrollment and a staggering $63 million operating loss. As part of cost-cutting measures, Drexel laid off 60 employees, with an additional 155 opting for voluntary retirement.
Merlo will need to address these financial issues head-on, as Drexel aims to recover a positive operating margin by 2027. The university has set a goal to generate $150 million through various cuts and revenue increases, a task that may fall largely on Merlo’s shoulders.
Vision and Leadership Style
In a recent interview, Merlo expressed enthusiasm for leading Drexel, citing the university’s innovative co-op program as a standout feature. He considers himself an “academic entrepreneur” and is excited about the potential for collaboration and adaptation within the institution. His previous experience at NYU saw him prioritize fundraising and effectively managing staff resources, which he refers to as “right-sizing.” This approach focuses on aligning talent with the institution’s needs while reallocating resources efficiently.
Merlo’s academic journey began in Italy, where he was a first-generation college student. He earned his undergraduate degree in economics and social sciences from Bocconi University, later moving to the U.S. for his doctorate in economics at NYU. His career has spanned several prestigious institutions, including the University of Minnesota and Rice University, where he also held positions as a professor and department chair.
A Leader with Diverse Interests
Beyond his academic and administrative roles, Merlo has a passion for coaching water polo, a commitment he has maintained throughout his career. He believes in the importance of teamwork, stating that while coaches guide teams, it is the teams themselves that achieve success. Alongside sports, he enjoys opera and cooking, mentioning that risotto is one of his specialties.
As Merlo prepares to step into the presidency at Drexel, he brings a dynamic blend of academic expertise, leadership experience, and a commitment to fostering collaborative environments. His appointment marks a new chapter for the university as it navigates financial challenges and strives for academic excellence.
