BAE Systems has secured a contract worth over $70 million from the U.S. Navy to enhance its Mk 45 5-inch naval gun systems and associated equipment. This recent agreement builds upon a previous contract awarded in late July, which totaled $47 million, with an additional modification announced on September 30 amounting to $23.5 million.
Upgrades to the Mk 45 Mod 4 Configuration
The upgrades will transition existing systems to the Mk 45 Mod 4 configuration, which features a 62-caliber barrel and a mechanically reinforced gun mount. A significant addition is the fully digital control system that seamlessly integrates targeting and fire control data. These enhancements enable the use of advanced munitions that deliver 50% more firing energy, setting the stage for future precision-guided munitions with greater ranges.
Strengthening Naval Firepower
Brent Butcher, Vice President of Weapon Systems at BAE Systems, emphasized the importance of this upgrade in light of recent events in the Red Sea. “The latest configuration of the Mk 45 gun system equips U.S. Navy personnel with the necessary firepower to ensure their safety at sea. Our commitment remains steadfast in delivering state-of-the-art naval gun technology and advanced munitions to U.S. Sailors and their allies,” he stated.
Cost-Effective Solution for Modern Needs
The Mk 45 upgrades represent a cost-effective strategy to guarantee that U.S. Navy Sailors maintain their long-range strike and air defense capabilities. This initiative allows for optimal performance from a versatile inventory of advanced 5-inch projectiles, which can be replenished while at sea. By modernizing these platforms, Sailors gain access to cutting-edge technology that supports advanced munitions and future operational requirements, all at a lower expense than acquiring new gun systems.
Project Timeline
Work related to this contract will be conducted at BAE Systems’ production facility located in Louisville, Kentucky. The project is expected to reach completion by the end of 2028.
