San Jose State Volleyball Coach Addresses Controversy Surrounding Transgender Player
San Jose State volleyball head coach Todd Kress has spoken out about the national controversy surrounding a transgender player on his team and the seven forfeited conference matches, including a tournament semifinal, against Boise State. In a statement provided to Fox News Digital, Kress emphasized that his team was prepared and ready to play each match according to established Mountain West and NCAA rules of play. He denied taking away anyone’s participation opportunities and expressed disappointment that other teams chose not to play against them this season.
Repercussions of Forfeits
The forfeited matches by Boise State, Wyoming, Utah State, and Nevada resulted in the team’s players, coaches, and staff receiving appalling and hateful messages. Kress condemned the actions of those who sent such messages directly to the student-athletes, coaching staff, and others associated with the program. He acknowledged that this has been one of the toughest seasons for him, his players, and the staff, but maintained a focus on the court and the safety and well-being of his players amidst the external noise.
Lawsuit Allegations and Gratitude
Kress was named in a lawsuit filed by team co-captain Brooke Slusser and several other Mountain West players against the conference and San Jose State. The lawsuit alleges that Kress has communicated with a private lawyer in an effort to get Slusser removed from the team. Kress thanked Slusser, along with transgender teammate Blaire Fleming and the other seniors on the team, for their tremendous efforts throughout the season.
Security Measures and Tensions in the Locker Room
Due to the attention the team was receiving, San Jose State University coordinated police protection for the players during away matches. The heightened security measures were prompted by the first forfeit by Southern Utah, and armed security was brought in for subsequent matches. Kress expressed frustration with former head coach Trent Kersten, who recruited Fleming but did not inform other players about her transgender identity. Kress acknowledged tension in the locker room but believed that addressing it and working through it could lead to positive outcomes.
End of the Tournament Run and Ongoing Lawsuits
The Spartans’ tournament run has come to an end, with the players remaining unharmed. However, the lawsuits continue. The team will now focus on regrouping and moving forward from the challenges they have faced this season.
