Former Cincinnati Bearcats basketball player, Steve Toyloy, passes away at 37

Steve Toyloy, a former center for the Cincinnati Bearcats men’s basketball team, has tragically passed away at the age of 37, according to a statement released by the school on Sunday. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.

Toyloy, who played for the Bearcats from 2008 to 2010, was remembered by the team in a heartfelt post on social media. “Cincinnati basketball mourns the loss of Steve Toyloy, a Bearcat from 2008 to 2010,” the post read. “Our thoughts are with Steve’s family, teammates, and all who knew him.”

During his time with the Bearcats, Toyloy played in 67 games, averaging around 15.8 minutes per game. He contributed an average of 3.6 points and 3.5 rebounds in his appearances. Under the coaching of Mick Cronin, the team achieved an 18-14 record in the 2008-09 season and a 19-16 record in the 2009-10 season. They reached the NIT tournament in 2010 but missed the postseason in 2009.

Although Toyloy did not make it to the NBA, he continued his basketball career internationally. He played in countries such as Turkey, Brazil, and Malaysia. In fact, he was named the MVP of the Malaysia Pro League in 2019. Even in recent years, Toyloy was still actively playing basketball as of 2023, as reported by sports writer Jordan Yap.
