Georgia’s Kirby Smart calls out CFP selection committee after win over Tennessee

Georgia Makes Strong Case for College Football Playoff with Victory Over Tennessee

Georgia’s 31-17 win over Tennessee on Saturday solidified their case for a spot in the College Football Playoff. Ranked No. 12 in the latest rankings, the Bulldogs were on the outside looking in on the bracket. However, their victory over the No. 7 ranked Tennessee team is likely to change that.

Coach Kirby Smart had a message for the selection committee, expressing his frustration with the lack of clarity surrounding their criteria. “I don’t know what they’re looking for. I really don’t,” Smart said. “I wish they could really define the criteria. I wish they could do the eyeball test where they come down here and look at the people we’re playing against and look at them.”

ESPN reported that the committee chairman, Warde Manuel, attributed Georgia’s drop in rankings to turnovers and offensive struggles in their loss to Ole Miss. However, in the game against Tennessee, Georgia had an impressive 453 total yards and no turnovers.

Smart emphasized the importance of considering the challenging environments in which the team plays. “They’re not in that environment,” Smart said of the committee officials. “They’re not at Ole Miss in that environment, playing against that defense, which is top five in the country with one of the best pass rushers in the country, and they’re fired up. They got a two-score lead, and they’re coming every play. They don’t know. They don’t understand that.”

With an 8-2 record this season and games against UMass and Georgia Tech remaining, Georgia’s chances of making the final bracket hinge on avoiding a third loss. Failure to do so would likely end their playoff hopes.
