Golden Globes Host Nikki Glaser Roasts Celebrities Over Failed Presidential Endorsements
In a comedic opening monologue at the Golden Globes, host Nikki Glaser took aim at the celebrities in attendance for their past presidential endorsements that seemingly had no impact. Glaser initially showered the room with compliments, only to quickly transition into playful mockery.
Addressing the famous and talented crowd, Glaser remarked, “I am not here to roast you tonight. I want you to know that. How could I, really? You’re all so famous, so talented, so powerful. I mean, you could really do anything… I mean, except tell the country who to vote for.”
The audience erupted in laughter as Glaser continued, “But it’s okay! You’ll get them next time! If there is one. I’m scared.”
Celebrity Endorsements Fail to Secure Victory for Kamala Harris
Leading up to the presidential election, several major Hollywood celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Alec Baldwin, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Golden Globe nominee Harrison Ford, publicly supported Vice President Kamala Harris.
Despite the high-profile endorsements, Harris ultimately lost to President-elect Donald Trump. Not only did she fail to win any of the seven swing states, but she also lost the popular vote. Additionally, Harris was unable to flip any county that had previously voted for Trump in 2020.
Glaser’s Excitement to Mock the Celebrity Audience
Upon being announced as the host in August, Glaser expressed her eagerness to humorously target the celebrity audience, citing controversial former host Ricky Gervais as her inspiration.
In a statement reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Glaser shared her excitement, saying, “I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Golden Globes. It’s one of my favorite nights of television and now I get a front-row seat (actually, I think I have to host from the stage). The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film but also for comedy. It’s one of the few times that show business not only allows but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least I hope so). (God, I hope so.)”
Glaser also acknowledged the challenge of hosting a live and unpredictable show in front of Hollywood’s biggest stars, joking, “who also might be getting wasted while seated next to their recent exes.”
Celebrating the Tradition of Candid Monologues
Glaser expressed her admiration for past Golden Globes hosts Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Ricky Gervais, who have delivered memorable opening monologues that offered much-needed candor.
“Some of my favorite jokes of all time have come from past Golden Globes opening monologues when Tina, Amy, or Ricky have said exactly what we all didn’t know we desperately needed to hear,” Glaser shared. “I just hope to continue in that time-honored tradition (that might also get me canceled). This is truly a dream job. Plus, I no longer have to feel guilty for every TV show and movie I’ve binged over the past year. It was all worth it.”
The Golden Globes, a Night for Comedy and Entertainment
The Golden Globes is not only a significant event for the television and film industry but also a night where comedy takes center stage. Glaser’s hosting gig provides an opportunity to lovingly poke fun at show business while entertaining Hollywood’s biggest stars.
With Glaser’s wit and humor, coupled with the unpredictable nature of live television, the Golden Globes promises an evening of laughter and entertainment.
