In a significant development for Gwinnett County Schools, Superintendent Dr. Calvin Watts has been removed from his position following a vote by the school board. During a special meeting held on Friday morning, the Gwinnett County School Board convened in an executive session and decided, with a 3-2 vote, to “prematurely end” Dr. Watts’ tenure.
Despite the abrupt change, a spokesperson for Gwinnett County Schools confirmed that Dr. Watts will remain in his role until April 2. After this date, Dr. Al Taylor, who currently serves as the Chief of Schools for Gwinnett County, will step in as the interim superintendent beginning April 3.
Search for a New Superintendent Continues
The Gwinnett County School Board has announced that it will continue its search for a permanent replacement for Dr. Watts. He was appointed to the position in 2021 and has dedicated over a decade to serving in Georgia’s largest school district.
Response from Educators
The Gwinnett County Association of Educators has expressed their thoughts on the recent decision. They emphasized the importance of accountability for all individuals in leadership roles within the school district. The association stated, “We look forward to collaborating with the Interim Superintendent and the next Superintendent chosen by the Board of Education. We trust that the Board will engage with all stakeholders, including employees, as they seek a candidate who possesses the necessary skills, experience, and dedication to advance the district.” They also highlighted the need for transparency and a focus on students and educational staff to ensure all students have the resources they need to succeed.
As the Gwinnett County School Board navigates this transition, the community will be watching closely to see how these changes will impact the district’s future.
