Hero ‘band dads’ take down elderly active shooter at Texas high school

Band Dads Thwart Active Shooter at Texas High School Band Competition

In a swift and courageous act, a group of four tactically trained “band dads” prevented a potentially larger tragedy when they apprehended an active shooter at a band competition in a Texas high school. The Pasadena Police Department confirmed that 83-year-old Dennis Brandl was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he opened fire at the local high school’s event.

The Incident

On Sunday evening, around 6 p.m., an elderly man identified as Brandl walked into the auditorium entrance after a drum line competition. Shockingly, he was armed with a handgun and fired two shots, one hitting a door and the other striking a 26-year-old percussion technical consultant in the shoulder. Fortunately, the victim was quickly transported to a Houston hospital, where he remained conscious and is expected to recover fully.

Heroic Intervention

Without hesitation, a parent attending the event tackled Brandl immediately after he fired the shots. The Pasadena Independent School District police, along with a civilian and several good Samaritans, swiftly apprehended the suspect. The heroes who took down Brandl were identified as Air Force veteran Abram Trevino, Army veteran Adam Curow, Marine veteran Efrain (Polo) Castillo, and Houston Police Department Sgt. Joe Sanchez. These brave individuals, with their combined years of service, acted as a team to neutralize the threat.

The Arrest

Trevino and Curow, both having served for 13 years, along with Castillo, who served for four years, joined forces with Sgt. Sanchez, who has an impressive 32-year career with the Houston Police Department. Curow recounted the moment of action, stating that when the gunshots rang out, he and Sgt. Sanchez instinctively ran towards the danger. Sanchez, describing the arrest, explained how they disarmed Brandl and improvised handcuffs using a belt. The four men effectively restrained Brandl until law enforcement arrived at the scene.

Acknowledgment and Gratitude

The Pasadena Police Department expressed gratitude for the heroic actions of the bystanders, stating that they are confident their bravery prevented further violence. The Houston Police Department also praised Sgt. Sanchez for his selfless act, acknowledging his quick response in protecting lives. Superintendent DeeAnn Powell of the Pasadena Independent School District commended the staff, district and city police, and community members for their role in ensuring the safety of everyone involved.

Investigation and Motive

Authorities are currently investigating why Brandl was at the school campus and his motive for the shooting. Brandl claimed that he was being chased and feared for his life and that of his wife. However, it is important to note that Brandl was not affiliated with the band contest. He is currently being held without bond.

Averting Tragedy

Thanks to the swift actions of the band dads and other courageous individuals, what could have been a devastating incident was contained. Their bravery and selflessness serve as a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant and united in protecting our communities.
