Heather Bell, a mom of eight from Michigan, has mastered the art of budgeting and cooking for her large family. Despite having to provide for her adult children, she manages to spend just $12,000 a year on groceries.

Heather and her husband, Luke, had initially struggled to conceive, leading them to adopt their eldest son in 1999. Inspired by the success stories of others, they decided to explore fostering and eventually adopted six more children. They were also blessed with a biological son.

With a growing family, Heather had to learn how to cook for a large crowd. Many of her children came into her care with food issues and trauma, often relying on fast food. But Heather was determined to provide them with healthy and balanced meals.

Today, with four of her children still living at home, Heather spends around $1,000 a month on groceries. She runs a poultry farm and masonry business in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, which helps supplement their food supply. Despite her children being adults, they still gather at Heather’s house for dinner, enjoying the comfort of home-cooked meals.

Heather’s Cooking Journey

Heather admits that cooking for a large family has required some adjustments. She had to change her cooking style to accommodate the needs and preferences of her children. For example, if they were used to unhealthy foods like French fries and hot dogs, she would incorporate more vegetables into their meals. She also shares her recipe for a delicious tater tot casserole, made in a 17-inch dish.

Initially, Heather spent $500 to $700 per week on groceries. However, she has since cut back and now shops just once a month. She has become more self-sufficient by raising her own beef and eggs and preserving food through canning. These practices have not only helped her save money but have also made her family more sustainable.

Despite being frugal throughout the year, Heather doesn’t hold back when it comes to Thanksgiving and Christmas. She goes all out to make these holidays special for her kids, spending an average of just over $600 on each child’s gifts. She starts preparing for Christmas early, making notes and shopping since July.

Sharing Her Wisdom with Others

Heather recently published her own cookbook, “Mama Bell’s Big Family Cooking,” which contains over 100 recipes. The book not only provides delicious meal ideas but also offers insights into her family’s journey and how she adapted her cooking methods as the family grew. Heather hopes that her cookbook will be a helpful resource for other large families who struggle to find recipes that cater to their needs.
