The project was initiated by the New York-based real estate developer LeFrak, who has transformed “The Beach,” a 336-unit rental tower situated in the Newport neighborhood of Jersey City. This ambitious endeavor features a 180kW solar system composed of 450 panels, which is projected to reduce the building’s carbon emissions by 13%. This reduction is comparable to taking 37 gas-powered vehicles off the road each year.

The solar array, installed by Brooklyn’s Sunkeeper Solar, represents an investment of nearly $1 million. Its primary function is to supply energy to the common areas of The Beach, which include essential services like elevators, lighting, and climate control systems for the lobby and other shared amenities. The design of the roof and the building’s orientation have been optimized to maximize solar energy capture, making the project not just environmentally friendly but also economically sound.
Advocacy for Solar in Urban Settings
Doug O’Malley, the director of Environment New Jersey, emphasized the importance of solar initiatives in urban developments, noting that Jersey City is particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change. He stated, “Solar makes sense on multi-family buildings. Projects like this should become the standard for new developments. In addition to the solar project, LeFrak has also partnered with Envoy, an electric vehicle-sharing platform, to provide Newport residents with exclusive car-sharing options. This collaboration marks Envoy’s inaugural expansion into New Jersey, further promoting sustainable transportation in the region.
