Bill Belichick Making Waves in College Football
Bill Belichick, the legendary NFL coach, has recently made headlines by accepting the head coaching position at North Carolina Tar Heels. However, it seems that another surprising hire might be in the works, although there are conflicting reports about it.
ESPN reported on Monday that Michael Vick, former NFL quarterback, has been in discussions with Sacramento State to become their next head coach. This news comes as the Hornets are preparing to move to the FBS next year and have over $50 million in NIL resources. Additionally, they are also building a new stadium for their football team, according to ESPN.
Vick himself confirmed that he has had conversations about potentially taking the Norfolk State job. “I know how to lead and I know what it takes,” he told The Virginian-Pilot.
However, The Sacramento Bee contradicted ESPN’s report, stating that Vick is not a candidate for the Sacramento State job. The paper cited an unnamed member of the athletic department who dismissed ESPN’s report as a rumor.
Sacramento State president Luke Wood addressed the Vick rumor in a statement to ESPN, saying, “He has expressed interest in the position, and yes, I did meet with him about his interest in Sac State football and our athletic rise. As you can imagine, given the success of our athletic programs, our football head coach job is an attractive role.”
If Vick were to accept a head coaching job, it would be his first since retiring from the NFL. After his retirement, he worked as an NFL analyst with Fox Sports. However, Vick’s journey to redemption has been well-documented. He famously spent nearly two years in prison after pleading guilty to financing a dog-fighting operation, which caused him to miss the 2006 and 2007 seasons. Eventually, the NFL allowed him to return and play with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he spent five seasons before retiring in 2015, with brief stints with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Sacramento State, hoping for a better season in 2025, finished with a 3-9 record in the Big Sky. As they continue to make moves towards improvement, the potential addition of Vick as head coach would undoubtedly generate significant attention and discussion.
