Pentagon and Mexican Military Announce Coordinated Border Patrols
In a move to strengthen border security, the Pentagon has announced coordinated patrols with the Mexican military on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. The announcement, made by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), highlights the ongoing efforts of the Trump administration to tighten border control.
Cooperation on Security Along the Border
U.S. Northern Command General Gregory M. Guillot and Mexican General Ricardo Trevilla Trejo recently met to discuss cooperation on security along the Mexico-U.S. border. As a result of their engagement, a Joint Statement of Understanding was formulated and signed, outlining the cooperative activities to be carried out along the border.
Coordinated Patrols and Increased Information Sharing
Under the agreement, General Trevilla and General Guillot have agreed to conduct coordinated patrols on their respective sides of the border. This will involve increased information sharing and the establishment of methods for immediate communication. The Pentagon emphasizes that the deal emphasizes the importance of respecting each country’s sovereignty.
Mutual Security of the Border
Both leaders expect that this agreement will pave the way for further conversations and coordination at various levels to ensure the mutual security of the border. By working together, the aim is to create a safer and more secure border region for both countries.
Implementation of Trump’s Border Security Policies
This agreement comes just one month after President Donald Trump took office and began implementing his border security policies. As a result, there has been a significant decrease in the number of apprehensions at the border. In February alone, the average number of “gotaways” at the southern border dropped to only 132 per day, marking a 93% decrease from the highest numbers seen during the previous administration.
Challenges and Unwanted Interactions
While increased law enforcement at the border has proven effective in reducing illegal crossings, it has also presented challenges. Mexican cartel members have targeted law enforcement personnel. In one instance, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) helicopter was targeted by a laser from the Mexican side of the border. Additionally, there have been cases of suspected cartel members firing at Border Patrol agents near the border.
Looking Ahead
The coordinated patrols between the Pentagon and the Mexican military demonstrate a commitment to improving border security and cooperation between the two countries. By working together and sharing information, both sides aim to create a safer and more secure border region. As the implementation of Trump’s border security policies continues, the focus remains on ensuring the mutual security of the border.
