Responding to a 16-year-old contestant’s tears over not getting a chair turn from coaches, Bublé opens up during the Blind Auditions finale about one of his own rejections.

Michael Bublé looked back on a disappointing moment in his life on Tuesday’s episode of The Voice.
Zaza Benjamin, 16, from Oakland. Calif., gave an imperfect but promising performance of H.E.R.’s song “Hard Place” that failed to turn any chairs on the final night of the Blind Auditions, prompting tears from the contestant. Bublé offered Benjamin some words of encouragement, and then shared a personal story with fellow coaches Gwen Stefani, Reba McEntire, and Snoop Dogg.
“I lost the youth talent search in Memphis,” Bublé told the other coaches. “My heart was crushed, and when I see [Zaza], I can’t take it.” He added, “And, by the way, I deserved to win in Memphis.”

To Benjamin, he was all encouragement.
“I imagine that your heart’s hurting, huh?” Bublé asked her after the performance. “And it should. That’s part of the journey you’re gonna go through to become a star. You’re 16 years old. You lost nothing today.”

The five-time Grammy winner continued, “You’re looking at four people who have been told no, who have gone home and cried to their moms and dads, who’ve thought they were gonna fail a million times. You’re good enough. You really are.”
He went to the stage and hugged her.

The other coaches were supportive, too. McEntire told Benjamin that she “recovered magnificently” after having trouble at the start: “Way to hang in there!”
Snoop reassured her, “I see the greatness in you, baby girl.”

Before walking out on stage, Benjamin, who said she attends a performing arts school, had noted that she was nervous, because she’s used to performing with others.
“I struggle with confidence,” she said. “I’m used to, like, singing with the whole big group and, like, people backing me up, so this is really new for me. I am terrified.”

Benjamin also correctly noted that teams are filling up; in fact, each of the coaches filled their teams on Tuesday’s episode, the Blind Auditions finale. Each coach now has 14 artists on their team for the Battle Rounds, which will then see each team reduced to nine contestants, who will move on to The 3-way Knockouts. Five artists from each team then proceed to the Playoffs, when each Coach can only advance two Artists to the Live Shows.
