CINCINNATI — A heartwarming story of friendship and resilience is unfolding at Walnut Hills High School, where students are rallying to support one of their own in her battle against cancer. Katherine James and Gigi Moore, who met as teammates on the school’s soccer team in 2022, have forged a bond that has only deepened in the face of adversity.
Gigi Moore’s life took a dramatic turn in October 2023 when she received a cancer diagnosis. “The tumor that I have is actually a gastrinoma; it’s a malignant neuroendocrine tumor,” Moore explained. Her condition stems from Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, a rare type of cancer typically found in men over the age of 50. Despite the challenges, Moore has found unwavering support from James, who has stood by her side since the diagnosis.
“When I got diagnosed, she just kind of randomly showed up for me,” Moore said, clearly touched by her friend’s support. “I was very surprised by it obviously, but that’s just the kind of person she is.” James, who had previously joined the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in memory of her great uncle who succumbed to cancer, felt compelled to take action in honor of her best friend.
Team Hope Hustlers: A Community Effort
This year, James organized “Team Hope Hustlers,” a fundraising initiative that has united over 50 students from 14 different schools across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Their ambitious goal is to raise $75,000 in just seven weeks, with all funds directed towards cancer research. “We are focusing all of our money towards cancer research in honor of Gigi to help people find the treatment that they need,” James stated.
Fundraising Initiatives
The team is employing various methods to raise funds, including:
- Restaurant fundraisers
- Personalized fundraising letters
- Online donations
- A benefit gala scheduled for March 8 at the Junior League of Cincinnati
All proceeds will go directly to LLS, aiming to provide critical assistance to patients like Moore in their quest for effective treatment options.
As Moore prepares for surgery this Thursday to remove the tumor located at the head of her pancreas, she remains hopeful. “I’m excited,” she shared. Following a lengthy 14-hour surgery, she will focus on recovery, with the possibility of a liver transplant in a few years. This journey not only highlights her strength but also the powerful impact of community support in times of need.
In an inspiring display of solidarity, the students of Walnut Hills High School are demonstrating that together, they can make a difference—one fundraiser at a time.
